The Catalina area is an unincorporated area of approximately 8500 people located approximately 14 miles north of Tucson. Our community's approximate boundaries are: Oracle Junction on the North, the Big Wash on the West, Catalina State Park on the South, and the Coronado National Forest on the East. Oracle Road is the main north-south traffic artery. The only government infrastructure available to provide services to this population is the Pima County government.  In the absence of a local government, the Greater Catalina/Golder Ranch Village Council, which is composed of elected volunteers, offers a community forum for citizens and provides an interface between citizens and governmental bodies. It also strives to help bring public services to the area. The Catalina area is largely rural but is evolving toward a more suburban setting as new developments move into the area. However, individualized single family dwellings, whether adobe, wood, or mobile, still dominate the scene. Catalina is host to a large senior population particularly in the "Snowbird season" from November through April. Hispanic people are a large segment (estimated 30%) of the population. There are modest numbers of Asians and Native Americans in the served area. |
