- Sheriff’s
Dept Report – Dty. Baughman asked audience if they had questions. What’s happening with illegal quad
drivers? We enforce quads and
dirt bikes heavily – first stop warning and record – if we’ve dealt with
them before and they don’t have license – we tow the quad. What’s
happening with gangs in Catalina?
He is not aware of gang related activity in Catalina. What about vagrants? We have
a few but they mostly live in the desert and dept checks in on them
frequently. What about Meth
house/lab activity? No labs found
recently – there is still use and traffic activity but many folks that
were offenders are currently in jail.
- Golder
Ranch Fire Dept Report – Batln. Chief Pernett – Community block grant
2006 – increased fire hydrants on Columbus and addressing signs (brought
sample of addressing signs).
Border of area Forecastle/Pinto/Bowman/ E Edwin Road and
Mainsail. Fire dept has been
trying to contact folks in this area to let them know that they are
entitled to signs on their properties.
Fire Dept is not sure they can sell signs to other residents that
don’t live in area – he thinks if they have signs left over we could
probably have a sign. Signs are
reflective at night.
- Wildfire
season upon us – going to get worse – trim bushes and trees around
structures. Fire dept going to
areas, evaluate property and leave a green card for “good job” or a red
card for information on how to make house more fire safe. Call STATS: Catalina 66 total calls, 57 medical calls, 5
fire calls, no structure fires, rest of the calls were pest calls.
- Guest
Speakers
- Patrick
Cavanaugh – Arroyo Grande from the County’s perspective – County met with
St. Land dept and Oro Valley for two hours today. Little progress made today – still
talking. Wildlife corridor to
the south is major issue and St. Land dept said they were talking to game
and fish and they feel the crossing is already compromised and think the
corridor should go up north in Pinal
County. No buffer to the
south of Catalina. No wildlife
crossing. Concurrency water,
transportation – County has passed new legislation dealing with
developers showing that they have a plentiful water supply – many
criteria need to be met. Going
to meet with same parties in two weeks. St. Land will put all County information/concerns in a
format and look at it closely.
OroValley meeting April 2nd addresses Arroyo
Grande. (Initiating
pre-annexation agreement).
Patrick spoke of challenge juggling St. Land, OroValley and the
County’s leverage as regards Arroyo Grande. Without PLANNED development land would be sold in 100 acre
parcels and development would be piecemeal and probably ugly. Oro Valley had meeting and adopted
principles/concepts of Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan – motion made and
approved. Patrick said he will
continue the dialog with Oro Valley and St. Land and Supervisor Day is
continuing to provide the Catalina Community with her support.
- Al
Trice – Catalina community Services Building Update – “What can happen
when groups collaborate” – new building – lot all cleaned out, drainage
problems cared for – all financing in place – collaboration with Ann Day,
Health Dept, CCS & CVC. Meeting
with architect and County people first week of April and they’ve made a
tentative list of space allocations and they will start working on plans
– preliminary plans hopefully in place by June. Will have Health Dept, CVC room, meeting rooms, CCS areas.
- Just
completed Junior Achievement program at Coronado School K-8. 47 volunteers worked on program. Many from the Oro Valley NW Hospital
including administrative staff.
Total cost $15,000 - CCS put up $5,000 and the rest came from many
businesses in the Catalina area.
–Purpose is to bring the message to kids that they need to stay in
school and why. Kids loved
it! Food and clothing bank
patronage up 10-12% this year – more people need what we do. Clothing bank busier than food
bank. Delivering meals three
days a week to over 60 people.
When we have a common goal in Catalina we don’t have problem
getting the jobs done.
